Where could one go to claim the life they so desperately want, and thrive in their own way without outside objectives coming in and terrorizing their choice of life?

Perhaps a person would feel comfortable residing in Seneca Village in the city of New York. No, wait. That was demolished and replaced by a centralized park.

How about within Freedmans Village? There, one would have opportunities to work, train, educate oneself, raise a family and just live. Oh wait, that city was closed. Currently, in its place rests a military cemetery.

Rosewood, Florida may be a great place to stay. It is a fairly new civilization. It is thriving and coming along. Nope. No. I was mistaken. That community was burned to the ground and nothing replaced it.

There is always the Greenwood District within Tulsa, Oklahoma. Now there would be an ideal location to become the best version of yourself.

The Greenwood District is booming from the success of a Black American community. This community is known as “Black Wall Street”. A thirty-five-square-block area harboring the city’s entire Black American population. (Oklahoma Historical Society)
In 1921, the population of Greenwood has grown to reach circa 10,000 persons. It is one of the largest, most prosperous Black communities in the U.S. (Tulsa Library)

Greenwood Avenue is the central location for the community. There are surrounding, cross streets and a mix of residential neighborhoods and commercial streets that make up the community.
It is a Black-owned and Black-operated economy.

If you were on a stroll through the Greenwood District you would encounter retail and service businesses such as grocery stores, beauty salons, shoeshine shops, cafés, and clothiers. You need professional services, you could rush to doctors’, lawyers’ offices and real estate agents. For current events you could seek newspapers, schools, or even a business college. For entertainment, there are movie theaters, nightclubs, and hotels. The community also consist of restaurants, laundries, and small manufacturing or repair shops.

How the Tulsa Race Massacre Began | Tulsa Burning: The 1921 Race Massacre | History

One hundred and five years ago, May 31 – June 1, 1921, a community is destroyed. Residents of Greenwood District are killed. Their homes and businesses were torched, bombed and burned to the ground.

What was it all for? If the initial incident regarded two individuals, then why did an entire community have to be levelled because of it? Was this attack to do in part of the act or did it have to do with something entirely different? Will we ever know?

Take heed to these words.
No matter what life throws at you. Just so long as it isn’t death. You are to sit up, stand up, get back on that horse and continue trotting on the path you were destined to be on. Nothing! I mean, nothing should ever be allowed to get the better of you.

Remember, keep your head up. Because life can only be played forward.

Stay blessed.
